It goes without saying that ransomware is one of the biggest threats on the Internet, since they will almost certainly leave you significantly less wealthy. Having a working and updated antivirus program on your computer is the first thing you should do, but there are ways to fortify your defenses against ransomware. One of them is CryptoDrop. It looks out for tell-tale signs of ransomware and it acts promptly, before it gets the chance to cause too much damage. The best part is that you won't notice any hindrances while the software is working.

CryptoDrop is available in free and paid versions, with some limitations to the free one. Downloading and installing the software shouldn't take more than a minute, but you will have to restart your computer once the process is complete. The hardware requirements are modest and you don't have to install any additional tools or drivers.

Installing the software on your machine is all you have to do. It will run quietly in the background and it will act immediately if it detects any signs of ransomware. If an attack occurs, the software will switch to lockdown mode, which essentially sets all protected files to read only, to prevent malicious programs from modifying them and, more important, encrypting them.

Lockdown mode can be enabled on demand as well, with only a single click, on the software's compact user interface. This is particularly useful if you suspect an attack yourself and want to play it safe. CryptoDrop is set by default to protect the files in the Library folders, but you can add other folders to the list yourself, in the general settings menu.

While in lockdown mode, it is highly recommended to back up all your files, for obvious reasons. Fortunately, CryptoDrop can help you significantly with its data recovery capabilities. If a ransomware program manages to encrypt some of your files, you can call upon this feature to restore them to their original state.

Even if you have adequate security on your system, CryptoDrop can provide you with an extra layer of security against ransomware.

Pros

CryptoDrop protects your system while working silently in the background. The software reacts immediately at the first signs of ransomware. It also comes with a data recovery feature.

Cons

Certain features are not available in the free version.
